Philosopher Robin L. Zebrowski contends that the Matrix franchise is merely telling the story of the Gnostics. "The Matrix, while a smash blockbuster success and a captivating science fiction story, is simply a blanket that has been pulled over the real story being told." And, "Only a few are given access to the truth, while the rest must prove themselves worthy of the knowledge in order to gain access to the Absolute" (Killing the Buddha). Not necessarily new ground, but a good capsule summary of Gnosticism plus interesting speculation on naming conventions in the movies.
