The character of Xander is barometer of culture. He is every part of the American Dream (read: mass hallucination) as encompassed by those accomplishments that ‘we’ love most. He is the James Bond of the post-Nintendo generation. A clone, genetically engineered to survive the world its predecessor was slaughtered by. XXX is to James Bond, as Pong is to Tennis: the bright new morning of an idea who’s original packaging wasn’t cutting it. He is stupid, a stuntman, the sexy version of ‘Jackass’. Yet he is still a washed-up remnant of a previous age. He is the hunter/gatherer that once reigned supreme in the jungle, but his jungle has been taken away, there is nothing to hunt and his gathering consists of nothing more than ‘Number 3, with a Coke, Super-Sized’. With his only skills no longer needed he is worthless and must evolve. But in this world of ‘being yourself’, evolution is the ultimate betrayal. So he adapts his skills to the environment, he is utterly worthless flotsam in the mainstream and he is praised for his honesty and bravery.
