Hey Jimbo,
Yeah, I am a fan of Dire Straits, so I know the album.
It is not at all metaphorical to apply the title of Alchemist to Knopfler, or John Huston for that matter.
While the Einsteins and Hawkings of the world snipe over the details of a Unified Field Theory, wizards like Huston and Knopfler develop the components of said theory into illuminating and entertaining spells that threaten, for better or worse, to last forever.
The truth about Grand Unification is that the proper theory IS also a working model of that theory and the model IS in turn REALITY ITSELF.
Everything and even Nothing turn out to be, above all, works of art.

Mark Knopfler’s “Private Investigations” and “On Every Street” were both odes to Film Noir… and The Maltese Falcon is probably the best of all Film Noir.
You (coincidentally/purposefully?) used the word ‘alchemy’ in describing Knopfler, which was the named of Dire Straits’ fourth album.
